Cowboy boots are having a moment, there’s no denying it. Whether you’ve forever been a die-hard Western fashion fan, or are dipping your toes into the pool for the first time, investing in a pair of Western boots will definitely not be a mistake in 2023.
Cowboy boots can seem like a one-note fashion investment, but that is far from the truth. In fact, we’d classify them as a neutral footwear choice ~ they have the ability to tone down silk slips for day wear, elevate cut-off denim and work seamlessly into a bohemian wardrobe or a minimalist one alike.
Here are our top tips for styling your cowboy boots with, well, pretty much everything.
1. Denim
Denim and cowboy boots go hand-in-hand, but it’s not just cut-off shorts that this boot style works with. If you are looking to style your cowboy boots with some vintage Levi’s shorts, layering on top with a Western shirt over a tank will give you the Americana country look in a flash. Just add a wide-brimmed hat.
With jeans, it’s always best to wear cowboy boots with bootleg or flare styles {we also love a wide leg denim short}. This elongates your leg and gives the most authentic Western feel to your overall style.
2. Mini Dresses
There are three excellent options for mini dresses and cowboy boots. The first is, of course, a sweet prairie style. Puffed sleeves, eyelet details, bows and ruffles ~ it all works with a cowboy boot. It’s all about the contrast between the ultra-feminine and tough working boots, so play it up with soft waves and barely-there makeup.
Second, yes ~ you can wear your cowboy boots for a night out. If you’re going for a fitted mini, choose something a little retro. Think fitted lurex for a 70s/80s moment, or crochet like it’s 1969. Avoid a bold makeup or hair look here ~ the vibe is toned down disco, so bed hair, waves or even crimps work really well. Make like Euphoria and give yourself a disco eye look with little to no makeup on the rest of your face.
Lastly, one of the most perfect cowboy boot moments is a great tan pair teamed with a denim button-front mini. This will hands down become your go-to fit, trust us! Denim minis look good on everyone, and work for pretty much any outing, too.
3. Maxi Dresses + Skirts
Make your bohemian dresses and skirts work hard through spring with a pair of cowboy boots. The best length is midi or 7/8 here so you can see most of the boots, but honestly cowboy boots work with any length, giving you a bit of height and keeping your feet warm on those slightly chilling spring evenings.
Really lean into the Western energy and throw a suede vest or sleeveless shearling vest over your dress or blouse, too. You’ll get that layered warmth we all love in the trans-seasonal months, plus it’s giving Dolly Parton. Who doesn’t want to look like Dolly Parton, right?
